I have been interested in movement, fitness and exercise for as long as I can remember. When I was 5 my mum put me in gymnastics to stop me ruining the couch cushions. When I was 10 she used to send me out in the backyard in the rain to wear off the energy built up after a day inside at school. At 15 she would insist I went for a run or down to the local gym to put me in a better mood. She knew me better than I knew myself.
I joined in as many sports as possible - gymnastics, sailing, running, hockey, cricket, soccer, swimming, surfing and to this day I still like trying new forms of movement. It was as I got older however that I started putting two and two together and realising what my mum had been showing me all those years ago - I was a much nicer, calmer, more productive person when I was engaged in regular movement.
It was also as I got older that I realised that while regular exercise is important not everyone enjoyed it the way I do, including my mum. As wise as she is to my own needs, she isn’t a fan of typical exercise and used to avoid it. For her, the idea of going to a gym, or swimming laps in a pool was so unappealing that she simply said ‘no thank you’.
The trouble is, regular exercise is important regardless of our age. Not only are there a myriad of physical health reasons why we should incorporate exercise into our daily life but there is endless research out there demonstrating the cognitive, emotional, social and mental health benefits that regular exercise brings.
I know how great I feel when I am healthy and fit. So I decided to do something about helping others find this feeling. I retrained, firstly achieving a Diploma in Counselling and then following this with my Certificates 3 and 4 in Fitness, qualifying to be a personal and group trainer. Now I am offering classes to tweens, teens and over 55 year olds adults, to work on strength, co-ordination, balance and functional movement.
